Treatment and exposure

Ground contact treated timber

Timber touching soil or persistently damp material needs a specification for that exposure. Explain the ground interface and expected use. Ask for written treatment confirmation rather than relying on a green or brown colour.

Start with the project specification

Preservative treatment should be specified for the intended use. Tell us how and where timber will be installed. We will confirm the offered specification with the quotation; colour or a general treated description is not enough to choose it.

What to include in your enquiry

For ground contact treated timber, describe the finished arrangement as well as the individual pieces. List thickness, width, length and quantity with clear units. If the timber must match an existing component, send its actual measurements and a photograph of the profile.

  • The intended use and any ground contact or exterior exposure.
  • The timber section, length, finish and quantity for each item.
  • Any designer-specified grade, connections or installation requirements.
  • Your delivery postcode, required date and receiving arrangements.

Confirm the details before ordering

A quotation needs to identify what will be supplied. Check actual dimensions, treatment requirements and any structural specification against your project. Availability, prices and delivery dates are confirmed individually. Tell Jeff where an alternative section or length would affect the layout before accepting a substitution.

These guides help prepare an enquiry. Follow the supplied product instructions and obtain a suitable design for load-bearing work.

UC3 and UC4: specify the application

UC3 relates to above-ground exposure; the appropriate treatment depends on the conditions and component. Ground-contact timber and exterior structural supports require particular attention to UC4. Being above ground does not automatically make a decking joist a UC3 application. Ask for the proposed treatment specification and supporting documentation before ordering.

See the Wood Protection Association treatment guidance and TDCA guidance for deck substructures. These use-class requirements do not confirm the specification of an individual product offered for quotation.
